How to use the calculator
- Sort the cash. Separate bills and coins by denomination and face them the same way.
- Count each stack twice. Enter the number of bills or coins of each denomination; the subtotal updates as you type.
- Add each cheque. Type each cheque amount on its own line. A new line appears automatically.
- Check against the envelopes. Enter the total written on the giving envelopes to see whether the count is balanced, over or short.
- Print and sign. Print the count sheet, and have both counters sign it before the deposit is sealed.
Counting tips that prevent most errors
- Two unrelated counters, always. Both stay with the money from the moment the plate is collected until the deposit is sealed. More on counting-team controls →
- Count every stack twice, ideally with the second person recounting the first person’s stacks.
- Strap or band bills in standard bundles (for example 25 or 50 notes) so recounts are quick.
- Endorse cheques immediately with a “For deposit only” stamp before you add them up.
- If it doesn’t balance, recount before you investigate. Most differences are a stack counted once. What to do when it won’t balance →
Need fund splits and year-end totals too?
This calculator answers “how much is in the bag?”. Sunday Tally answers the rest: which fund each gift goes to, what goes into each bank account, and what each donor gave this year. It’s free and runs in your browser.
